Our Story

The Big Sky County Water & Sewer District was established in July 1993 to manage water and wastewater services in response to rapid growth in the Big Sky area. As the community transitioned from a small, seasonal resort into a year-round destination with increasing residential and commercial development, the need for a centralized and reliable infrastructure became urgent.

To meet rising demand and protect local water resources, the District launched a series of major infrastructure upgrades, including the construction of a state-of-the-art Water Resource Recovery Facility. Completed in phases between 2022 and 2024, the facility more than doubled treatment capacity, significantly reduced nutrient discharge, and enabled wastewater reuse for irrigation and snowmaking. These efforts have positioned the District as a leader in sustainable water management while supporting Big Sky’s continued growth.
