Outdoor irrigation is one of the largest drivers of summer water demand in Big Sky. As drought conditions continue and seasonal demand increases, the District encourages residents, HOAs, and property managers to explore water-wise landscaping and irrigation practices.

One option gaining attention throughout the region is turf conversion — replacing high-water-use grass in low-use areas with landscaping that requires less irrigation.

Benefits can include:

  • Reduced outdoor water use
  • Lower irrigation and maintenance costs
  • Improved drought resilience
  • Reduced runoff and environmental impacts

Even small changes to irrigation practices or landscaping can contribute to meaningful water savings and help support Big Sky’s long-term water sustainability goals.
