Why are restrictions in place

Outdoor watering in Big Sky has a major impact on the District’s water system. During the summer months, irrigation demand can increase overall water use by up to 300%, and some individual customers may see usage increase by as much as 600%. This seasonal strain makes it more difficult to maintain storage tank levels—especially during wildfire season and periods of drought.

Research from Montana State University Extension also recommends limiting watering during the hottest parts of the day to reduce evaporation, improve soil absorption, and prevent unnecessary water loss. MSU further recommends deep, infrequent watering practices, with most lawns requiring only 1–1.5 inches of water per week, including rainfall.

To help protect Big Sky’s long-term water supply, maintain adequate storage for fire protection, and encourage more efficient outdoor water use, irrigation restrictions are in effect each year from June 1 through September 15.

Enforcement: Irrigation restrictions are backed by District ordinance. Failure to follow these rules is a violation and may result in fines.
