Why are restrictions in place
Outdoor watering in Big Sky has a major impact on the District’s water system. During summer, irrigation demand can increase overall water use by up to 300%, and some individual customers may see usage increase by as much as 600%. This seasonal strain makes it harder to keep storage tanks at safe levels—especially during wildfire season.
To protect the water supply and maintain storage levels for fire protection, irrigation restrictions are in effect each year from June 1 through September 15.
Enforcement: Irrigation restrictions are backed by District ordinance. Failure to follow these rules is a violation and may result in fines.
Irrigation Tips
- Water early in the morning or late in the evening to reduce evaporation
- Use drip irrigation instead of sprinklers when possible
- Check your irrigation system for leaks regularly
- Follow seasonal restrictions to avoid fines and conserve water
