To support long-term water sustainability and align with updated Montana State University irrigation and turf management recommendations, Big Sky Water & Sewer District is implementing new irrigation practices focused on reducing peak summer demand and improving outdoor water efficiency.

The updated approach encourages smarter irrigation scheduling, limiting watering during the hottest parts of the day, reducing overwatering, and promoting drought-tolerant landscaping and turf conversion where appropriate. MSU guidance also emphasizes that healthy landscapes can often thrive with less water through improved irrigation efficiency and lower-water-use turf varieties. These changes are intended to help protect water storage capacity while supporting responsible community-wide conservation during ongoing drought conditions.
